What is Rural Housing: Housing Repair Loans and Grants program?

The Rural Housing Repair Loans and Grants program offers loans and allowances to homeowners with very low revenue to repair, improve, modernize, or to eliminate health and safety risks in their rural homes. Loans are approved for up to 20 years at 1 percent interest.

Allowances may be approved for recipients who are 62 years of age or more and can be utilized only to cover repairs and improvements expenses to eliminate health and safety risks. Loan/aid combinations may be approved for applicants who can pay back part of the cost. Lower than 50 percent of the area median income is considered as very low-income for this program.

Who is eligible for this program?

In order to get qualified for the loan program, you need to be a homeowner who draws very low salary, and you need to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who resides in a rural area. To get qualified for the aid program, you need to satisfy the above conditions, and also be of age 62 years or greater.

Loan Terms

Loans of up to $20,000 and funding of up to $7,500 are offered. Loans are for maximum 20 years at 1 percent interest. A real estate mortgage is needed for loans of $7,500 or above. Complete title services are needed for loans of $7,500 or above. The allowance may be recollected if the property is sold within three years. Loans and allowances can be merged for up to $27,500 in support.
